Negative Space - Object

Cliff and I went on a little weekender camping trip to McSwain Lake, about a 30 minute drive from our house. We didn't want to go far since we couldn't get off work early Friday and didn't want to set up camp in the dark (In which we did anyway). It was perfect!!! We got a lakeside site...Friday evening, with the 3/4 moon bright, it lit the entire lake and hillsides. I had only wished my camera had the capabilities to capture it, because the lake was so glassy calm it captured the images of the moonlit foot hills. It was awesome. We just sat by the lake and talked in the moonlight until it got chilly (about 11pm). Yesterday was a bit windy, but gorgeous! Today was perfect and I didn't want to come home...Anyway, on one of our little drives, I got this gnarly oak tree as a negative space shot.

Theme: Negative Space

The term "Negative Space" refers to a large area of a photograph that is devoid of detail. Too MUCH negative space will cause the viewer to become lost in the void of emptiness, too little and the subject will show up cramped in the image. So came the term, "less is more" and the negative space turned to become a very positive part of the image where your subject will stand out much, much more.

For the month of October, we will explore Negative Space. Below are the challenges by week. (Try to stay on subject for that week)

Mini - Little Things

This is our turtle, Lenny! Maycin and I bought him for Papa's pond a couple of weekends ago. Maycin named him and I learned later that there is a children's show/cartoon that has a turtle named Lenny on it. Lenny is about 2 inches across, does not have a left eye and found haven in this pond plant away from our monster 10 inch gold fish. Poor Lenny gets bonked around by the fish, but he holds his own. I'm waiting for the day that Lenny grows to be 10 inches across and we'll see who gets bonked around then! Anyway, he brings a measurable amount of joy as we always hunt for Lenny...he's hard to find sometimes...and are pleased when we do find him.

Today Dave, Cathy, Cliff and I took a day trip to Shaver Lake (2 hrs. from here) just to get away and enjoy each other's company. We didn't have any time constraints, real agenda or expectations other than to just enjoy the day, each other and God's beauty!

Here is something that tells a little about me...I do like to paint now and again...not just paint, but be creative...painting is just one thing I like to be creative with...photography, sewing, writing...If you are curious, yes, this painting is of two human bodies and I will leave the rest up to your own imagination.

This was taken at Pajaro Dunes in April 07...this poor snail was trekking across the sand...no one told him there was salt in the sand!

"Nana!"

Maycin and I had a Nana/grandson day yesterday, while Papa got his retro trailer! Mayc and I went to the Bloss House for a few photos. This was the "Nana, how many more pictures are you going to take" look! We did go to the library, video store and even bought a turtle to add to Papa's pond. So, it was a pretty fun day all around. One thing that tickled me was, when Maycin and I left to go to the pet store, Cliff and I kissed each other good-bye. I drove about 3 houses down from ours and Maycin asked, "Nana, did you just kiss Papa?" I told him yes. His reply to that was, "Nana, that's icky!!!" This is such a fun age!
